"How much do shrimp cost to start?" gets answered with forum guesses and years-old numbers. We track every US specialist listing daily, so here is the livestock math at today's actual market medians — two honest versions of it, since the genus choice roughly doubles the bill.
The budget colony: red or blue Neocaridina
Ten shrimp is a real starter colony — enough genetic spread to grow, few enough to buy in one pack. At today's medians:

The step-up colony: Crystal Red Caridina
Caridina colonies are usually started larger (harder water prep, slower breeding — start with more animals): 15 Crystal Red at today's $4.60 median is $68.98 of livestock. On top of the animals, Caridina keeping generally means RO water and remineralizer — equipment we don't track or price, but which belongs in the honest mental budget. Optional: the janitorial add-on
A small crew of Amanos handles algae the colony won't: 5 at today's $6.75 median is $33.73 (why size and pack move Amano prices). Skip this in a Caridina tank you're keeping pristine for breeding; add it in a display community.
What this budget deliberately leaves out
- Tank, filter, substrate, water gear — we track livestock prices, not equipment, and equipment costs vary too much by what you already own to publish one honest number.
- Shipping — typically a fixed cost per box in this hobby, which is exactly why the one-larger-order pattern (colony + janitors together) beats two orders.
- Losses — a well-prepared tank shouldn't need a casualty budget, but Caridina beginners often lose a few animals learning water prep; it's another reason the step-up colony starts with more.
